FAQ'S
Which grade of sodium bentonite is right for my project?
It depends on how you’re applying it and what you’re sealing. Fine grades like Minus 20 and 6/20 are designed to be tilled or blended into soil for maximum penetration. Coarser grades like 12/20 and 1/4 are built for dry broadcast or over-water applications where the clay sinks and swells in place. And if you have a specific leak to plug — a pipe, a borehole, or a wet spot — Hole Plug is in a category of its own. See our grade comparison cards above for a full breakdown.
Can I use sodium bentonite in a pond that already has water in it?
Yes, but grade selection matters. Minus 20 and 6/20 are not ideal for over-water applications — they’re too fine and will disperse. For ponds with standing water, use 1/4, which is heavy enough to sink to the bottom and seal from below. For targeted leaks in a wet pond, use Hole Plug.
How much sodium bentonite do I need to Apply?
Application rates vary depending on your soil type, the severity of seepage, and the application method. A general starting point for pond sealing is 2–4 lbs per square foot when tilling in, but sandy or highly porous soils may require more. Contact us for a project-specific recommendation.
What is Hole Plug used for?
Hole Plug is designed for targeted leak repair — not general pond sealing. It’s the right product when you have a specific, localized problem: a pipe penetration, a borehole, a well casing, a foundation crack, or a persistent wet spot in a pond. The coarse chips swell aggressively on contact with water to fill voids and gaps where broadcast products won’t reach.
What's the difference between Minus 20 and 6/20?
Both are fine-ground grades suited for tilling and blending, but Minus 20 is the finer of the two. It hydrates faster and penetrates more deeply into soil, making it the better choice for soil amendment and tight blending applications. 6/20 has slightly more body and handles a bit easier, making it the more versatile all-purpose option.
When should I use 12/20 vs. 1/4?
Both are broadcast grades, but the key difference is water depth and seepage severity. 12/20 works well for shallow broadcast applications — spreading dry over a pond bottom or shoreline before filling. 1/4 is the coarser, heavier granule and is better suited for broadcasting over water, deep ponds, or situations with heavy seepage where you need the clay to sink quickly and swell in place.
