From Volcanic Ash to Bentonite

Over 45 million years ago a volcano erupted spewing ash throughout the region.  Much of that ash landed in what is now South Brewster County Texas. Through years of weathering in sea water and natural processes, this volcanic ash was transformed into bentonite. Here in the Agua Fria Mountains is the Texas Sodium Bentonite Mine.
